Hi,

My son will start 'proper' nursery for 5 mornings a week in September, at the school he will go to the following year.

Does anyone have any good tips for preparing him?

He goes to playgroup 3 times a week at the moment and he took AGES to settle in - I want to avoid this as much as I can in September....

Also, do I need to get anything for him? They don't have a uniform and won't be staying for lunch until after christmas

Thanks

A xXx

Andrea, u dont need to get him anything except your time and love - which your giving him already.

As a nursery manager all i would suggest is talking about nursery in a positive manner at times when hes busy and doesn't have to give it a lot of thought. Too much thought can scare them too much. Talk to him while hes playing with his bricks or looking a book - explain to him that he will be able to do those things at nursery as well and all the things he enjoys doing at playgroup he can still do at nursery.

Have a chat with the Manager at the nursery and see if you can go along and see the nursery while its busy - this may be more beneficial for you to see first as this may avoid him getting upset. If you are happy with the nursery then that will give him good vibes.

Does he know anybody else who is going to start in Sept as well? if so, invite them around for tea, play etc so that he has some good firends to play with at nursery and you can get to know some of the parents.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. Good luck to your son as well - my fingers are crossed for you both.

P.S.....sounds really cruel, but if he cries, kiss him goodbye and leave the room. Stay within the nursery if you need to, but dont let him see you. It is horrible to leave them crying but he will settle quicker. xxxx

i found that my son just accepted it straight away. he did cry the odd morning but apparently as soon as i was out of sight he stopped and went to play with no problems.

i used to pack a small bag for him with a pair of tousers pants and socks incase he had an accident, then left it on his hook.

i think its a harder thing for parents than the children!
