Our 6 year old Granddaughter is due to have her tonsils out next Wed 25th & although we're all being encouraging & putting on brave faces for her, she is absolutely terrified of going into hospital & having this done! Are there any parents out there who's little ones have had this op & how long did it take them to get over it? P.S. I remember the pain of having mine done at 13 - but times & procedures have changed since then.

Didn't realise tonsillectomies were so rare tthese days.....!
Yes they are,we all seemed to have them when we were little. She's old enough,I think, to have it all explained to her and to say perhaps, that 'you won't get any more of those nasty bad throats anymore' .
I'm still terrified of hospitals and I'm nearly 50, but the nurses are really good with kids these days and let parents in all the time. We still had 2 short visiting times each day,and I still remember eagerly looking for my Mum when they let them in, and crying when the bell went for them to go.
The younger they are the quicker they bounce back and I should imagine the surgery has improved since you had it done. Don't worry!

Thank you so much for your encouragement ganesh.

Our granddaughter had her pre-op check on Wednesday & I went along with her Mum & little sister too. The Nurse went through everything with us & showed S a book with pictures of another little girl going into hospital to have her tonsils out, going to sleep, waking up, it being slightly painful, recovering, playing, then going home the same or next day. I think S was quite relieved to know that her favourite toy cat Jessell would also be given a name tag & could go into theatre with her, ah!

My how times have changed from when I had mine done in 1960! I was promised it wouldn't hurt & would have plenty of ice cream afterwards. Instead, It was in, pre-med, op, no ice cream & have never forgotten the agony - let alone staying in for 7 days!

I'll be glad when next Wed 25th is over & done with & S is safely back at home!
