A.D.H.D in babies
Is there any such thing as A.D.H.D in babies, as my daughter has a 4 month old daughter and she just does not stay still for one minute while she is awake, ive never personally known this with my children or any children i know, the only time she is still is when shes asleep, does anyone know what the reason could be, and is it anything to worry about. Thank you in advance.

It is almost impossible to test the attention span at this age as they don't really have one.lol. Some babies are just active. My 6 week old grandson is never still whether awake or asleep,he is the most fidgety baby i've ever seen but is perfectly healthy. If your daughter is worried tell her to have a word with the health visitor but i'm sure there is nothing to worry about.
My first baby used to be awake from six in the morning until ten at night then sleep solidly through apart from night feeds- she would drink and drop straight back off. I cannot tell you how I used to feel when baby books used to say do not worry if your baby is sleeping a lot ... not on a public forum anyway! Then she was constantly on the go- and at times had her entertain me face - like she was Henry the Eighth and I was the court jester. Thankfully she now keeps the hours of any teeenager - awake all night and functioning during the day for work and Uni.
If it's any consolation, my baby (13 weeks tomorrow) sounds exactly the same. Legs and arms always on the go, very noisy - even when asleep, which isn't much as it happens!!! I think we need to just appreciate them for who they are! I spent the first 6 weeks of his life worrying about everything and even asked my HV about his 'hyperactivity'!! x
Both my babies were very active, even in the womb and one of my children has ADD not even diagnosed until she was 14 years old.
Firstly it isn't the end of the world if she has it,and secondly as it is a genetic (and often hereditary) you are born with it although I agree it would be impossible to diagnose until toddler age at least and most likely at junior school.
I wouldn't be worried anyway and I think your grand-daughter sounds like she'll be a lot of fun. Enjoy!

The answer is NO. ADHD should NEVER EVER and let me say again EVER be diagnosed before the age of 6 or 7. For many reasons and confunding factors.
ALL children are different. Some are more active than others, attention comes in stages and at 4 months she's wanting to explore and discover her new world.
Better an active child who is interested in the world than one who is cut off and in their own world.
Accept her for who she is, keep an eye on it, be careful not to label her hyperactive as she gets older and if at 6/7 you are still worried then seek help. But she's 4 months so to put it simply, chill out.

hi there
i have read all of what other people have said but i have something different to say. my son is now only 10 months old and he is being investigated for adhd but for totally different reasons. and this is due to my hv she has said that this is the last resort as to his screaming, it didnt even accur to me that could be it though. so it can be norm but being active is not a sign of adhd. she will soon calm down

my daughter who is now nearly 18 yrs old and suffers with adhd and severe conduct disorder was the perfect baby sleeping straight through the night, she fed well and her adhd didnt show until she was about 9 months old she became destructive started head banging wouldnt do anything she was asked to do she was hyperactive i spent many years trying to find out what was wrong with her and often thought it was my parenting skills however aged 7 i was sent to an adhd specialist who diagnosed her straight away and she was medicated she is now in college studying to be a nurse. adhd often runs in families as my younger son also has it and i have recently had a new baby with my new husband and i am beginning to see a similar behaviour pattern she is 14 months old i can honestly say that none of my children displayed adhd symptoms as early as 4 months some babies are often on the go after all its all new and exciting to them

sorry i just read one of the comments about not diagnosing girls with adhd this is rubbish i have 5 children 3 girls 2 boys with only 2 of them diagnosed one a girl and the other a boy most of the specialists are very good and diagnose and medicate very quickly to enable the children to have a full life. i do agree that adhd should not be diagnosed in a child under 5 as at that stage they can tell and as i said in my previous comment i am almost certain that my 14 month old baby has adhd however i shall just wait and see as time goes on and i'm lucky enough to have skills in place to cope with the ups and downs of the behaviour
