I have recently been told that if heaven forbid anything should happen to my children i wont be able to bury them unless i have had them christened is this true?

And anyway, you try getting anyone buried in a churchyard these days. Impossible! Not enough room see.
If you're not religious don't go through the vows. If they want to do it later then fair enough but let it be their choice.
