Baby Nancy is having problems gaining weight, she's 13 weeks old and has only put on 3lbs since birth. She's dropped 2 and a bit centile lines so she's now between the 9th & the 2nd.

The HV says she has 'mild reflux' and suggested I feed her SMA staydown, which made a huge difference the first week but then things got worse again, the GP then prescribed infant Gaviscon which didn't made a difference either. She's now back on Staydown but things are getting worse again.

I feel like I've tried everything, different teats, bottles, feeding & sleeping postions, using a dummy after feeds, winding during and after feed, or just afterwards, using colic drops.... the list goes on, the only consolation is that Nancy doesnt seem upset by all this infact she usually smiles when she's being sick!!

We're going back to see GP tomorrow but does any one know what the next step would be? or any other possible causes for all this vommiting? Its beginning to really get me down as she will generally soak through 2-3 muslin cloths, 2 bibs, 3 sets of her clothes inc.vests and 2sets of my clothes per feed not to mention the sofa, bedding, carpets etc.

This might not be relevant but she sleeps loads esp. at night, its the only feed she keeps down (well most of it anyway!) she sleeps from 10.30 till 7.30-8.30. Is this a bit much for her age?
Sorry to hear about your trouble. My little girl also suffers with reflux. Thankfully, a combination of Gaviscon and getting older is helping hers. From personal experience I found that Infacol made my babys reflux worse and found she vomited even more.
There are other medicines that can be given if Gaviscon does not work, typically ranitidine. This is something you will need to discuss with the GP.
If it is any consolation, Nancy will grow out of her reflux and it will ease as she grows.
This is quite a good site for support etc http://www.littlerefluxers.co.uk/
Good luck x
speak to your GP or HV about changing from a cows milk formula so a soya one. It may be that shes allergic to milk, they often grow out of it though if she is.

The sleep sounds about right, Amelia has been on just 4 bottles (7oz) a day since 3.5 months old. and sleeps from 8.30/9.00 to 8.00am. I havnt got a clue what weight she is though.

If shes smiling when shes sick then it obviously isnt hurting her in any way but I hope you get to the bottom of it soon as its obviously upsetting for you to see her being sick and not gaining much weight.
My daughter suffered with this a bit (she had terrible colic too!) so we used a combination of colief (colic drops) and infant gaviscon, luckily this worked for her.
It sounds as though you've tried everything so I agree with redcrx - that she is allergic to the milk. My sister-in-law had to change her daughter's milk for a little while for the same problem. Maybe you could try SMA whysoy?
Good luck, it won't last forever

hi, just to let you know I took Nancy to the GP this afternoon, after looking at her centile charts, has requested and emergency appointment with a paediatrician, she said she could send us in as an acute admission but would be worried about Nancy picking up some illness whilst there, and said Nancy can't afford to lose any weight.

She also prescribed soy milk in the mean time, to see if it could be an allergy. So we'll se how it goes....

I was so shocked to be taken seriously as HV usually just fobbs me off saying it "probably just looks worse than it is" I feel like a massive weight has been lifted!!
Im glad you were taken seriously k8. I hope that the soya makes a difference.
