can you start a childrens daycare without contacting Ofsted until you are up and running.

If by 'up and running' you mean actually having children in your care, then the answer is 'no'. You should involve Ofsted as soon as possible to prevent any unnecessary delays in your registration - bear in mind it can take up to six months for Ofsted to carry out the necessary checks (to ensure your daycare will comply with certain national standards), including Police checks, before you can be registered. If the daycare will be provided in your home, appropriate Police checks will be carried out on all adults living with you (e.g. spouse, adult children) irrespective of whether or not they will be involved in the daycare.

also fire regualtions will have to be adhered to and you would probably have to have a local Fire Safety Officer check your home too, to ensure you comply regarding exits, fire extinguishers etc.  I know from experience that you are far better to get these people involved beforehand.

Have to agree with 'Miss Zippy' Ofsted need to be contatced asap as Iyou can't open til you have been assessed. They can be quite good at giving you advice on what you can do if you give them a ring!
