My friend finds out the gender of her baby today and wants to do a gender revealed. Undecided as to whether it's a cute idea, or a bit tacky...

What's a 'gender revealed'?
i have no idea what a gender reveal is, but can guess.
It *** me off enormously that people use the 20 week scan as being all about the gender. It's about checking the health of the baby and viability of the pregnancy
ps how's your sister getting on anthro?

It's a little get together or sometimes a huge event where people reveal their unborn baby's gender. I think each to their own, but I am slightly with Bednobs, that people feel so charmed that they think nothing can possibly go wrong so it's all about the shallowness of boy or girl when actually it'd be nice to just celebrate that everything is okay. x

It's when people are invited round, and there's either blue or pink confetti in a balloon that's popped, or cut a cake and there's either pink or blue icing.

'gender revealed' was a typo naomi, that's been corrected. Thanks for pointing it out...
I thought it was more than obvious from the headlines what a GR is.

Yes, tacky and shallow. IMHO.

Bednobs, suffering with 'morning' sickness as all day sickness, but baby is healthy!
I think they're very tacky, but each to their own. I couldn't/wouldn't go to any 'gender reveal' party - where a blue cake or a pink cake is brought in, for example.

Oh, right. Thanks spath. Not something I'd do. I don't like 'me, me, me' fuss.
it's rather self centred to think that your friends particularly care what gender baby you are possibly going to have

I don't like it much either. It is a bit 'Me, me, me!' IMO. Why don't they just tell people once it's born?
-- answer removed --
perhaps it's a young person thing :)
Originated in America :-)
Sounds stupid to me. Why not simply say they're a xxxx if they want everyone to know. Would this "reveal" nonsense be something originating in the US ?
Question Author
Anne, it feels very American. Don't get me wrong, I do care whether the baby is a boy or a girl. I care more that it's healthy. But an excited text message would suffice!
