I think they recommend it now if you are trying for a baby. I did however 16 years ago (vain & first child) read that Zinc helped prevent stretch marks so I took this all the way through my pregnancy. I got stretch marks anyway! but, and I'm not sure it's related, but compared to me, her Dad, and her siblings, she has the most perfect teeth and the dentist says if everyone had her teeth, he'd be out of a job. No research has told me this, but she has had the same diet as the others, and obviously our genes, so I tend to think I wonder if that was the Zinc supplement?
I didnt even know about folic acid when I had my other 2 but that was 13 and 10 years ago. With the one I'm having now it took me 3 years to get pregnant and keep it so I started taking it when I found out. Made me feel really sick and didnt realise it was one of the after effects so stopped taking it at 11 weeks instead of 12, naughty I know but I have had a scan and all ok.
My pregnancy wasn't exactly planned so I didn't take it before hand. I did start taking it as soon as I found out I was pg and scan showed everything fine. Next time I will take folic acid while trying to conceive.
p.s there is a campaign to get folic acid added to bread. This has happened in Australia and birth defects showed a significant reduction.
