Antenatal depression?

Has anyone suffered from antenatal depression? When I found out I was pregnant I was delighted but now I find I am neither happy nor unhappy. Its like I don't care one way or the other. I feel really bad for feeling like this as I think I should be full of the joys of spring and instead I am a miserable cow. Feeling this way is, in itself, getting me down further. I am not scared of the future or worried or anything like that, just feel empty and devoid of emotion - any emotion!

Actually, I am not even sure if this could be termed antenatal depression, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also I am 9 weeks pregnant if that is any help.

Many thanks
A miserable warpig/cow

hi warpig, glad to hear you sounding chirpier.

Id say take a small wee sample just in case. They check urine for different things at each of your appointments but not always at booking in. Might be wise to go prepared rather than have to walk through reception with a bowl.

As for the issue of peanuts, some say avoid at all costs others say avoid if there is any history of allergies in the family. i ate peanuts during my pregnancy and my son is ok, but that was my risk and choice.

again with runny egg, its to ensure you dont catch salmonella, but eggs are usually from reputable suppliers and are stamped so should be ok. Do avoid things made with raw egg though, like homemade mousse or mayonaise (helmans is fine though)

Unpasturised cheese and milk is to be avoided but if you crave soft cheese like brie then you can (if you search) find pasturised brie in some stores.

LOL redcrx, I was thinking about the wee sample and I would have to walk through the patient waiting area with my sample, not pleasant - for anyone!

I found the pastureised Brie you mentioned in Tesco, which is great. Have been having hard boiled eggs but they're a bu**er to dip the soldiers in!!! Maybe I will look out for the Lion brand ones.

I am heading back to Belfast in a few days hopefully, so that should cheer me up too, to see my family and friends again. I think being stuck over here and not really knowing anyone doesn't help as there is no one to be excited with and discuss things with. Don't get me wrong, I have mrwarpig but he's a bloke and seems to be more interested in how big my boobs will get, no real surprise there then!

All in all I feel a lot better though so happier days!

lol @mrwarpig's thoughts. Tell him they may not change at all, mine certainly didnt :(

try joining an ivillage board, as well as the mums due ones there are meet a mum ones.

I spent last weekend in nottingham, having arranged a get-together of some of the mums from my 2005 mum board. It was great fun and the babies (well they are 2 now) had a blast. Us mums went throught everything together from the news of our positive results to births and birthdays. Its great to be able to see them at times and share fun days out.

I cant imagine what it must be like not to have your family and close friends around at a time like this so i hope you enjoy your trip back.

Why not try and ivillage board and see what friends you can make.

I am such a dodo, I have joined the ivillage link you sent, put it on my favourites then forgot about it, d'oh, thanks for the reminder!
lol, pregnancy brain is what they call it.

Oh and beware. i thought pregnancy brain went back to normal after birth of baby. I realise 2 years after the event that its never going to go away lol
Hi warpig, I had my booking in appointment last wednesday. I was actually told on the letter with my appointment to bring a wee sample. I Had trouble with it though in that I just couldnt go! lol I managed a tiny amount, about 2 mm!, but that was enough to test for glucose and ........ forgot what the other thing is! lol

She wont attempt to listen to the heartbeat yet as she wont be able to hear it, and chances are she wont even have a feel of your tummy. She will check your height and weight though and basically just run through you and babys dad's family medical history.

All my cravings have gone........along with the heartburn, the sickness, the constant tiredness..........did give me a scare but Ive been reassured by my midwife this morning that all is ok and it just seems Iv been very fortunate and not going to suffer with symptoms anymore..........although they could come back! lol

My next appointment isnt until Sept 11th but in the meantime I have my first scan next month! I think thats when it will finally sink in for me lol

As for the foods........I would ask your midwifes advice with the peanuts, like redcrx said, the choice is yours at the end of the day. I didnt and wont take chances with eggs, but again that is your choice. The way I look at it is they are giving you these warnings for a reason and I personally wouldnt like to take the risk. You will get a list in your pack listing all the things to avoid.

Good luck!

Oh and as for men........mine claimed to be a legs man....then my boobs grew........he has spent some time ogling them!! lol
lol redcrx, I have always said the bigger my bump got, the smaller my brain got...........unfortunately as the bump got smaller after the birth, the brain never got bigger again........Im doomed this time! lol

ha, ha pyschick, I think its a conspiracy in my head, I have never liked peanut butter and am no great fan of runny eggs but once I have been told to avoid them then I want them!

As for the boobs, well, they already enter the room about 2 seconds before the rest of me so if they don't get bigger I would be delighted!
lol I actually look like Ive been and had a boob job! Im hoping mine stay put now as well.........especially after the birth! lol Sadly I lost my last "boob job" after I had my daughter :(

Is you booking appointment tomorrow or next Thursday warpig?
Question Author
Its tomorrow morning so I am hoping to book the ferry back home today and head off tomorrow evening if possible (how desparate am I?). I am assuming since your next appt isn't until sept that mine will be something similar and that the scan wont be until the end of Aug, so that will give me some time back home.

As for the boobs, yep, mine are definitely more 'rounded' and perkier, long may it continue!
Evevry health service is different, with mine, the first scan is done at around 12 weeks. As for my next appointment not being til September, Im not sure why the big gap. Maybe so you have had your scan and first bloods done for when you next see them again. As from September, I will see a midwife once a month then I think it goes to once a fortnight at around 30.

Not sure, havent got that fat with this one yet and its been so long since I did all this with my daughter! lol
Just wanted to remind you to pee in your bottle for todays appointment warpig! lol

I got my first scan date through the post this morning.......14th August at 10am...........I cant wait!!
Question Author
Morning pyschick, I am just back. Forgot to get a pee sample, well I did remember this morning but only when I was in 'mid-flow'!

All went well, no problems, although as I am b negative blood I will apparently end up a bit of a pin cushion according to the midwife. She asked some funny questions too, like is my partner a blood relative, I was tempted to say 'yes, hes my dad' but thought better of it! Mind you she was laughing too, apparently its geared more toward asian women who may intermarry. She also asked if there was any mental illness in my family although I dont think 'they're all nuts' was the answer she was looking for.

Well she worked out my dates and guess what? According to her I am due on the 24th too! Also got my date for the scan which is also the 14th, how weird is that? I have also elected to have an amnio so that should be sometime in sept, more needles, great.

She gave me loads of info and booklets to get freebees, are they worth it? Its just, I want the freebees but I don't want to be bombarded with useless literature trying to sell me stuff.

On the good news front, she weighted me and it turns out that I am 8 lbs less than I thought (for now!), so may as well bin the cr@ppy bathroom scales.

I mentioned about being unemotional and she said that some women are like that right up until they give birth and not to worry, so I won't.

All in all I feel a lot better and now that I have seen her, feel that there is more support. Was just thinking though, neither she nor my doctor did a pregnancy test. I have done two (tescos' not so finest), but what if i was just a big mad liar who liked to fake pregnancy? I know that it will show up in my sample but just thought someone would have tested me!

Will keep you posted. maybe nearer the time we could do a 'who will pop first' competition for abers.
Yay we can have a race !!! lol

Get the baby bounty pack just for the giggle...you will love the tiny pamper nappy! lol I dont why but getting that made it all feel that little bit more real!

My doctor or midwife didnt test me either to make sure. Apparently it is becaue home tests are so accurate these days. I have actually done 3 to be certain!

What is the amnio for? You would think I would know all this seeing as this is 2nd time round for me! lol
Hi Warpig

Glad your booking-in went well.
I sooo hope your scan confirms that you & Psychick are due on the same day. I am going to hound you both endlessly!

As a little side note, I found that the tears dried up in the 2nd trimester but came back with a vengeance (sp?) in the 3rd. Its good to keep the hubby on his toes though!

Hope your feeling good x

pixie woo are you still with us, has anything happened, have I missed anything? Please tell all!

psychick the amniocentesis is where they take some of the amniotic fluid out and test it for things like downs syndrome. Its is usually only offered to those over 35 as the risks are higher from that age on.
I thought that was what it was. Did your midwife not tell you that, if you request it, they will take extra measurements at your scan and this will give an indication as to whether your are low risk or high risk. They take a measurement of the back of the neck, the forehead and the nose area.

Although we have decided we would not have further tests even if this showed I was high risk but then again as I am 30 I am not really considered high risk anyway, but it still has been mentioned to me.

All I want to do is buy baby stuff! lol
Question Author
Strangely enough the midwife did not mention it at all, I had to ask her, which I thought was strange considering that I am 39. Yes she did explain it all to me but to be honest there was that much information this morning that most of it went in one ear and out the other.
Hi Warpig

Yes I'm still here but I'm being induced tomorrow so baby_woo will be here this weekend.

In regards to info given at appts, I always sit down & read my maternity notes when I get home. Quite often there's info in there which the mw hasn't bothered to tell me during the appt. They often use medical abbr. but I've found that I Google anything I don't understand & it comes up with a "translation".

I'll let you know how it goes when I post next week x
