I am a smoker and welcome comments on what I have written to the Imperial Tobacco Co. :-( a reply is awaited.)

"Dear Sir/Madam,

Ever since Players 'Medium' tipped cigarettes were withdrawn from the market, I have been smoking 'Embassy Number 1'.

Please correct me if I am wrong in my belief that originally your No.1 was made from pure Virginia tobacco but is now being manufactured from a blend of others.

My concern is that your company's cigarettes are now not what they were and, as I have to continually relight them whilst smoking, I would appreciate your observations on the issue concerned."

Does anyone remember Players No6 and No10 which we smoked as kids? God, they were foul!
remember both coming out No6 were 3/6 for 20 i think
<<you can still buy park drive think they are £7-14 for twenty>>

£7.14 for 20! Are you kidding? How the heck can any of you afford to smoke at that price. You must all be millionaires (although not for long at that price). I had no idea that's what they cost. Jeez.

Hi craft... Sorry if I appear to be ignoring you. I am finding it difficult to keep pace with all the responses.

I am pleased that someone else has had cause to complain about ciggies having to be re-lit. It is during about the past three weeks that I have had the problem. We'll be spending more on lighters the way things are going.....I remember the name 'Churchmans'. Hopefully they never caused your Dad any harm. and you are not affected in any way by smoking. I can honestly say that my health appears to be quite good and I am one of the lucky ones......Haven't been to the Doctors for about 15yrs and am not on any form of medication; if you exclude red wine, baccy and homemade food, which I cook. Don't you think Viv is lucky to have me.!!
Say yes because I am lucky to have Viv who doesn't smoke and accepts that I always have. However, she can keep pace with me on the red wine.

Thanks for the link to Passing cloud Dr Filth. That's taken me back 42 years. I think they cost 7/6 in those days which was a fortune!!!!! I only bought them occassionally as a treat.

In the meantime, my thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread; which remains open.

ron,

i have a very good friend who works for imperial. in fact he is a 'blend' quality control manager. he would have the exact answer for you.
cough splutter, cough cough more splutter, your welcome ;-)

What an informative reply to your query, they have to keep customers happy but I'd be surprised if you heard from them again.
I have switched to Roll-Ups many Years ago as it's far cheaper
I've cured myself of smoking in bed. I bought a water bed and filled it with gasoline.
i should say my friend isn't based in bristol
Don't know if this has been mentioned as I haven't read the whole thread, but hasn't the substance that was in the paper of a cigarette to keep them alight been removed as I thought it had been proved to be a fire hazard, or have I just dreamt this?
saltpetre / salt peter

I've had a further e/mail from Imperial Tobacco, which reads:-

In response to your recent enquiry, we have passed this to our consumer
services people in Nottingham and they will respond to you direct.
Question Author
The I.T.C. has now replied to me officially on this matter. Something of a 'smoke screen' because it has ignored my comment about Blended tobaccos having replaced pure Virginia. Although it does confirm a paper problem.

Anyway I have appended, hereto, the reply which I have received.

Ron.

"You mention in your email that you smoked Players Tipped cigarettes
withdrawn we still manufacture this brand.

With regards to the cigarettes going out, all cigarette manufacturers
(including Imperial Tobacco UK) have had to modify their cigarette paper
as part of an EU wide fire safety initiative.

This may mean that in rare circumstances, a cigarette may extinguish
during the normal smoking process. You can be sure that all our
cigarettes remain the same great quality and taste you have come to
expect from our brands."
