I am a smoker and welcome comments on what I have written to the Imperial Tobacco Co. :-( a reply is awaited.)
"Dear Sir/Madam,
Ever since Players 'Medium' tipped cigarettes were withdrawn from the market, I have been smoking 'Embassy Number 1'.
Please correct me if I am wrong in my belief that originally your No.1 was made from pure Virginia tobacco but is now being manufactured from a blend of others.
My concern is that your company's cigarettes are now not what they were and, as I have to continually relight them whilst smoking, I would appreciate your observations on the issue concerned."

I like it vulcan. lol.
In the days, before tipped cigarettes, it was calculated that from seven butts one could get enough tobacco to make another cigarette. The question then for schoolchildren was 'How many cigarettes can one make from 49'? ( seven sevens equal 49...Answer eight)

I used to smoke, 20 years ago. I worked in a shop, and noticed that most people were fiercely loyal to 'their' brand. Benson and Hedges were to the best sellers, Embassy smokers (the small ones) wouldn't even smoke Embassy No. 1, but at a push would have No.6 - but not the king size. - and Marlboro smokers wouldn't smoke anything else. JPS in the black box, were the most 'dis-loyal' if you like, and would smoke Benson's , Embassy no.1 or Rothmans. Park Drive smokers sometimes would have a Capstan full strength, and those that smoked the 'super' length used to tend to smoke what ever was on offer or the cheapest at the time. There was only two hand rolling tobacco's available then, Old Hoburn, or Golden virginia. I believe there's a brand called 'Lion' now too.
Midnightrider....I can remember when Benson & Hedges were sold in tins and were more expensive than the 'run-of-the-mill' cigarettes. I could only afford them as a luxury when on holidays (a fortnight off from work and going nowhere)
I blame Walter Raleigh for having got a lot of us addicted to cigarettes. :-

Hi tamborine...Thanks for your video clip. I haven't yet smoked my last cigarette but, having carefully listened to the lyrics of the Video clip, I cannot refrain from an old quip " It isn't the cough that carries one off; it's the coffin one is carried off in".
bill...You must be as old as me to recall such interesting facts. I remember 'Kensitas' my mum used to smoke them. She died a few months ago but was well into her nineties.(96....Gave birth to me just after her 16th birthday) Hell, why am giving away secrets.!! I've been smoking and drinking red wine whilst watching on TV 'University Challenge'.....One must keep the mind healthy.
