Henry, all he can do is to contact them again and stress how important his need for the funds are - if he also explains to the funeral director they should show some understanding too.
Many energy suppliers automatically refund excess credit when it reaches a certain level. (British Gas do so whenever 'spare' credit reaches £500, as I've been fortunate to benefit from on several occasions).
