My grandson is 8 3/4 yrs old. Hes got most things, so he's asked for clothes or money this Xmas. His parents and other family members have got him clothes, so he has plenty. We are determined not to give money, not at that age anyway. Any ideas out there? Spending about &50, tops.
Why not give him money but in a sideways way, and take him out for the day with you shopping so you can spend time together and help him choose what he'd like, that way he feels grown up, you get to spend nice positive time with him and he learns the value of things at the same time? x
My three Grandsons ( one 8 and two at 15)are all getting money , however I bought them each one of these for their desks - I now want one too after having a play.
Last year, I gave one of my relations a £40 gift card for Debenhams. He went with his mum to the January sales and really enjoyed buying things that he wanted to buy.
I've bought the same gift for my grandson (8y 5m) as I have for my friend's son (9y 2m). I've bought similar things in the past for children of around that age and they've always gone down extremely well:

(Read the reviews. It's clearly a very popular product!)
Good ideas! Like the Snap Circuit Buen.. Something to think about. It's not that we mind giving money, it just doesn't seem right at Christmas with a child. If we can't make our minds up, then maybe a store money voucher.
Yes, there's more fun for boys that age, a)finding where the presents are hidden b) trying to see what's inside them, than actually 'playing' with stuff. So wrap them up well.
Basically you are determined not to give your grandson what his parents say he wants....ok...why not? Perhaps a bit of 'control freak there'?
Rarely would an 8 year old have £50 in his pocket to buy exactly what he wants or to save it...whats wrong with that?
When our grandkids appreciated a cheque, Patsy we did it in a fun way.....
One year I put the cheque inside a bar of soap.....the cleanest child got there first.....another year inside a plaster model of one of the seven dwarves.....the softest granddaughter wouldn't smash hers to get to the cheque.....another year they got an envelope with clues so they had to do a treasure hunt around the house to find the cheque....
The year after MrG died I put a photo of him in a frame....yes it was the worst passport photo ever.....told them I wanted them to have something to remember Grandad by.....took them all a while to think to open the frame to find the cheque...
You're not a control freak....I know how nice it is to see a present being opened.... I just made a bit of fun out of giving the money and they still talk about the daft ideas I came up with.... :-)
