Visiting places we hadn't been before and not having to spent too much money; we went into Harrods (only buying a cup of tea and cake after browsing around). After visiting many famous shops & landmarks, we went to the theatre to see Mary Poppins - excellent show (having obtained cheap tickets for the show which I purchased from ebay !) In total it cost me about 60.00 including the cheap day return train ticket. Not bad ah, and we spent a lovely day & quality time together ... I think that counts for a lot more than money can buy. Don't forget to take your camera, you can have a photo done of the both of you and have it framed, something to remember the day by.... Enjoy !
Hi Disco Inferno Is she a young 50 or an old 50? I ask because I'm 50 next year and I'd hate to go and see Mary Poppins I'd rather go and see a rock gig!!
As far as a pressie goes I always think a luxury version of something that you use every day is a really nice gift (something your Mum wouldn't spend that much momey on if buying for herself). Like a really nice designer leather purse like radley or louis vuitton, or a pashmina, or a leather belt, cashmere scarf, really expensive cosmetics.
Or as Mustang Lady says spend the day together shopping. lunch etc and let her choose her own gift.
Hope she has a great day.

What about naming a star or a rose after her?

I agree, the photo album is a fab idea - first thing I thought of - or an A3 clip frame with a collage of photos of all her nearset and dearest.
Buy a Gift is an excellent site - give it a look - there'll definately be something on there.. http://www.buyagift.co.uk/

I received a digital photo frame for Christmas. It is just fab. My son put on loads of old family photos and some of my first grandchild,( Holly born 8 weeks early on Christmas Eve.) You can choose to have a slide show at different intervals and everyone who has seen it wants one. I have seen some advertised for around 40. I am sure you Mum would like one if she enjoys having photos around, and it takes up much less space.
Wish her all the best from me
