So it's a more effectionate name to me than my first. My son has a middle name, but I tend to ignore it to be honest!
My bump probably will have one, but just to honour a family member, I wont be using it!

I don't have a middle name,my parents had run out of ideas by the time I came along(i'm the second youngest of 8). All 3 of my kids have middle names. My eldest daughter(20 years old) has Caprice as her middle name,it was going to be her first name but I realised it could be shortened to Cap and didn't want that. My middle child has a family name (Joan-she hates it)as her middle name as does my son(Patrick-his granddad's name).
My brother's middle name is William after my dad and mine is Louise - don't think there is a particular reason for it, but a lot of my schoolfriends have it as their middle names as well, so I guess it was one of those names that wasn't quite popular enough to be used as a first name at the time. My son's middle name is Michael after his paternal grandad and ended up being born on that grandad's 50th birthday so it's ended up being a bit more special than we intended. We struggled with first names so we didn't put a huge deal of thought into his middle name I must admit.
I have 2 middle names, the middle name they wanted didnt roll off the tongue very well after my first name.
My eldest son has two middle names, his first one is my dads name and his second is David just because I like the name.
My youngest took ages to name, his Dad and I just couldn't agree. I caved in on he middle name, I don't really like it and it as no meaning to me at all. Still a bone of contention lol

I havent got a middle name, neither does my daughter, and we have already said this one on the way wont have one either.
I avoid using names that are already in the family as this is always going to upset someone. The only way round it is to use everyones name and then you just end up with a ridiculously long name!
We have got a dilema though as the name my boyfriend has suggested turns out to be my dads mothers real name, I didnt know as she was always known by another name. If we use this name, the few who knew it was her real name may think we have chosen for that reason.

Hi, natalie! :o)
My first name was chosen when my mum was 12 and my dad just went along with it and did as he was told. My middle name is after my mum's best friend from school. I hate it, though (shush, hellie! :o)). My sister's middle name they just liked the sound of and my brother's middle name is my dad's name, Vince.
My niece has my first name as her middle name, but I'm her only auntie so it wouldn't have caused any friction. I always said I would have my sister's name as a middle name for my daughter, but because my boyfriend and my niece idolise each other, my sister said she would prefer it if we had my niece's name, if and when we have children.
The best story is my dad's, though. His first and middle name were actually picked from a hat. His middle name is awful so it's quite lucky he didn't end up with it as a first name.
Another thing, though; if you choose the two Grandad's names as middle names, who goes first? :o) x x

My family all have middle names and all for different reasons. My middle name is Lindsay because my mums neighbour at the time really liked the name but only had boys. My older brothers and sisters all have family names as their middle names - e.g. grandparents or others e.g my 3rd brothers middle name is Grant the same as my mum's middle name as this was her mum's maiden name.
My Husbands middle name is Stewart which is a maternal Grandfathers surname - his first name is his mother's maiden name. So he really has 3 surnames!
My first son's middle name is Iain, after my brother and my husbands brother who both died and were both called Ian - we changed the spelling in case it was bad luck! His first name is Craig - not after anybody.
My second son's middle name is Alastair after his paternal grandfather who died before he was born. His grandfathers name was actually Alexander, but people from scotland will understand - this is the Gaelic version of Alexander. His first name is Ciar - also gaelic and not after anybody.

my middle name is Louise which runs in the family.
My daughters middle name was just going to be Lauren but she was born the day after my exes nans birthday who was in Australia on holiday at the time. Her name was Clarissa but called Claire for short. As this was also my best friends name her middle names are now Claire Lauren. My son's middle name was James after my dad's middle name (he died before he was born) also my grandad's middle name but because his first name begins with J also I ddn't wan't him to be called JJ so put the middle name Harvey in which I love. forgetting this was my mother in laws maiden name. She thought we named him for her but this wasn't the case I just liked the name. If I hav a boy this name his middle name will be Saul as it's my great grans maiden name but also unusual and like it. Only 1 middle name for this one unless something else crops up.

Hi Natalie - I love the dilemma of names.
My middle name is Margaret a family name but always shortened to Meg. I don't use it often as I feel it's a bit dated.
We have a tradition in our family that the boys have their mothers maiden name as a middle name my fathers is Kirkham and my son's is Bradley. Both my nephews also have Bradley as a middle name too which is nice as there is only me and my sister so our name carries on a bit longer.
If I'd had a daughter her middle name would have been part of my mothers maiden name as it would have been suitable, Carroll.
My grandfather was Joseph Arthur, Joseph being a family name but he was always known as Arthur and always signed his name J. Arthur which had a nice ring.
I worked in a sheltered housing scheme for a while and i was surprised at how many people born early last century use their middle names as their 'first' name.
And of course the other thing is sometimes the first and middle name and even the surname don't always 'flow' properly so their given name can be names that 'flow ' nicely even though they are known by their second name - eg my friends daughter is Hannah Verona (family name- but she is known as Ronni, short for Verona) because Verona Hannah didn't flow.

It's best not to choose a name too near the top of the list as this may 'date' your child in the future for example Joan's tend to be in their 70's and 80's Sharon's and Tracey's in their 40's Linda's and Susan's in their 50's, Michelle's in their 30's etc.

As an idea why don't you put the four inlaws names up and see if anyone can mix and match them and give you some ideas!
I know a couple of people who've done this and not only has it worked for them but all he inlaws are happy because there's a bit of them all in the name and it's unique!
(and while your reading all the names you'll probably get a bit of a laugh aswell!)

When my eldest was born we couldn't find a middle name that we felt went with her first name so we just gave her an initial, eg. 'T'.
The initial doesn't stand for anything, it is what it is, just an initial.
We then did the same with our second child.
The kids don't think too much to it, they think it's just weird!
However we like it and they don't have to use it if they don't want to!!
