It's a Lancashire place name, indicating that your paternal ancestors came from the village of Halsall.

Reaney & Wilson's 'Dictionary of English Surnames' (which is a standard reference work) gives the earliest recorded occurrence of the name as a reference to 'Simon de Haleshal' in the Lancashire assize records of 1225.

One of the family must have made a success of himself on the other side of the Pennines, because the 1335 Register of Freemen of the City of York records a 'Richard de Hallesale'.

The earliest record of the name in it's present form is in the Lancashire assize records of 1401, where a 'Richard of Halsall' appears.

Hi, Halsall is a small Parish between Ormskirk and Southport in West lancashire, my mother-in-law is buried in the Parish Curch Graveyard .

It is a place name derived from the manor of Halsall , I am very familiar with that area, it is mainly arable and grass farmland now but it was originally a moss and over the last few hundred years it has been reclaimed from the sea flooding which also helped create the resort of Southport.

Tyrone from Corrie is from nearer Chorley but he may well be from a line going back to the Halsall area. There are many Halsalls in Southport and Ormskirk, I went to school with quite a few people with the surname in Ormskirk, there is a Halsall Lane in Ormskirk too, which goes out past Asmall Hall then on towards Halsall.

In Halsall there are mainly farms and market gardens and small holdings, there is a small post office near the church and a couple of large garden centres.

The Littlewoods Pools millionaire, John Moores, lost his daughter in law, ex Miss Great Britain Kathy Moores, in a driving accident on Halsall Moss, she drove her car into one of the drainage ditches and drowned (about 1976), she was beautiful, she is buried next to my mother-in-law in the graveyard.

Wow thanks people. It's actually my new married name so I really wanted to know where it comes from.

However I do find that people tend to spell it as Household when ordering stuff over the phone :-)

Hi, I lived in Halsall for 39 years before moving here to Australia with my wife. You will find that local people pronounce Halsall as Holsol. The only people who pronounced it differently were outsiders!
My mum ran the village post office for 17 years until the late 1980's, and our family farmed there from the '60's. We have many fond memories! We emigrated from there to Victoria in 2002.
