How far back can you remember?

Something on another thread made me think - I can remember when I was very little, although others say that we don't start to remember for several years. I know the things I can remember are from my memory, not received images, as I can remember experiencing them and how I felt at the time.
I remember toddling down the garden and finding the tortoise, I was wearing a pink pram suit and must have been about 18 months old - I remember my father's 40th birthday when I would have been just under 2, he had a cardboard 40 on his cake - I remember my cot in the bedroom at about the same time.
What about you?

I remember my father carrying me down into the air raid shelter which had been dug out deep in the garden while the siren was wailing overhead. It's the first sound I can ever remember hearing and all these years later my blood still curdles whenever I hear it on TV programmes. I guess I must have been about two years old at the time.
