All my school friends used to tell me what a nice time they had and what lovely presents they got, I used to get nothing from my family and maybe a £5.00 present from the children's home.
Boxing day also became a sad day for me as that is the day my dad died in 1977.

I'm not particularly looking forward to Christmas but that shouldn't be interpreted as "I'm dreading it".
For me, each day over the Christmas period will largely be like most other days. (I'm unemployed so there's no break from work to consider). The only exception will be Christmas Day when I'll be visiting an elderly friend who'll kindly be providing me with Christmas lunch. While I'll enjoy her company (and that of her two lovely dogs) I'll also have to watch what she wants on TV and try not to fall out with her other guest (who's a grumpy old so-and-so at the best of times!). So I won't really be able to relax as I'd like to.
It's just one day which is a bit different and probably with no presents (apart from the free lunch) to brighten it up a bit :-(
So I'm not dreading Christmas but I can't really see much to look forward to either.

Chris that is so sad. I'm not looking forward to it very much either, but I have got a few presents to open and my neighbours will all be coming in to make sure I am all right and I shall be going to my son's house for Christmas Day (provided it doesn't snow too much) and my daughter's for Boxing Day. So although it won't be very exciting, at least I have something. I hope you enjoy whatever there is as much as possible.
fao buenchico - in response to your reply to tillyh345's question - i hope you have a great time when you visit your elderly friend. it saddens me to think of you not looking forward to xmas; and the fact that you're unemployed makes me wonder what is wrong with this world when an intellligent and helpful bloke such as you is overlooked in the workplace. you may remember helping me out massively on here a few months ago, as you have helped out so many others on this site, and i am still indebted to you for your time and advice. i said i'd buy you a beer if we ever meet and that still stands. 'tho you're not looking forward to xmas, i wish you a merry time and a happy and prosperous new year. all the best, kev

<sigh> I'm perfectly happy, thank you for your concern.
I've *NEVER* understood the pathetic notion that if someone is not deliriously happy just because it's Christmas, there must be something fundamentally wrong with them...
Christmas really is "compulsory happiness"...
