Where to stay in Cornall-Recommendations please

Looking at booking a summer holiday in Cornwall (2 adults + 1 10 year old boy) Never ventured into the area before. Any suggestions on which area/town to stay in.l . Was looking more at areas around the Devon border. Want a good beach and nearby tourist attractions (preferably to include zoos, farms etc) Any suggestions appreciated

Keep clear of Newquay - it does not represent Cornwall.

If you are beaching, go for the North Coast - however many of the villages are not that attractive but good beaches such as Portreath or Perranporth. St Agnes is nice. Anywhere around the north side of Padstow (St Enedoc) is nice but full of Londoners. Further up there is the Doc Martin village of Port Isaac and that is nice.

Further down St Ives is really nice and much improved with the Tate Gallery which has spawned a lot of nice smaller shops/galleries and some excellent restaurants. Great beaches with Porthmeor, Carbis Bay, Porthminster and even in the harbour. Some lovely countryside (wild) in West Penwith (St Ives to St Just and Lands End. Loads of hotels - an inside track but not near the beach is the Tinners Arms at Zennor. Also and inland and central and esay to get to is my local, The Plume of Feathers at Mitchell. Very nice pub just off the A30, comfortable and very good food. It's sister hotel is the Lewinnick, unfortunately in Newquay. The reason for dissing Newquay it is very much surfer and drunken teenager country.

When the daughter was young we used to rent a flat in St Ives every year.......you've got to be fit to get up the hill from the beaches though

Plenty to see on the attractions front by the way from the Eden project to Healey's Cider Farm Some lovely countryside and villages around Mylor and also Helford/Constantine and again wild on the Lizard. I would be hesitant to recommend Penzance.....but nearby Mousehole is a lovely village (with the Minack Theatre nearby - its open air). Cottages abound and somewhere like Classic Cottages offer excellent products and service - they don't accept just any property onto their portfolio (I know the owner and one of their senior managers over there); they are Helston based.

If you put up your specific interests and foods and a budget etc then I (we) could zoom in further

craft is right - there are some places (appts, flats (Barnaloft and Piazza) B&Bs and a few hotels down at the bottom as well - but most are up the hill and traffic in the town is seriously limited in summer - very narrow streets.

I like Falmouth too, good beaches, and the docks and harbour area are interesting.

Marazion is ok, a few nice galleries and eateries (not the St Michaels hotel though) - nice view of the English Mont St Michel....St Michael's Mount. But its near Penzance and the beach aint that good.

Could always try contacting Lord St Leven and see if he ahs a spare room in the castle.

Actually..the outside does and the views are. The rooms look a bit dated though.

Don't disregard Newquay. Parts of it are breathtaking. The walk from Fistral around the coast to Newquay Harbour. The other direction from Fistral (don't know where I am heading but I know I end up at a great pub right on the cliffs). When the tide is out the walk along the beaches is wonderful. Don't be put off by newspaper talk of drunks and layabouts, they can be avoided and I have bnever been troubled by them. There are still individual shops to be found and I know this will sound bizarre but the view from ALDI's car park is breathtaking. There is lots going on - see for yourself - don't be influenced by killjoys. Also if you have a car Watergate is close by and if you are camping Porth is worht a look. Good bus services, cheap taxis.

In addition to my earlier answer, I would like to clarify the reason I have never been troubled by drunks and layabouts is because I have never seen any in any significant numbers.

Seconding St.Ives, although you may want to try and stay in Carbis bay and walk in instead (the beach is also better at Carbis bay).
