Hi there. I'm buying an Islay malt whisky as a gift for someone who likes the peaty/smokey (or even seaweedy?) ones. Which is the better whisky - Laphroaig 10 year old or Ardbeg 10 year old? I can't decide between the two.

Laphroaig is a bit smokier than Ardbeg. In fact, I think it's reputed to be the smokiest of all the Islay whiskies. They're all good, each in their own way, and my own favourite is Bruichladdich.

I would suggest you also consider Lagavulan.

My partner who seems to know a lot about Whisky tells me that he
would go for Laphroaig 10 year old, it is a better known brand.
Prince Charles drinks it !

Laphroaig - pronounced 'leap-frog' (after you've had a few) :-)

One must also consider with what it is going to be mixed: a spritely ginger ale, or a heavier cola.

Laphroaig is a very odd taste to some, very 'iodine and medicinal' - I'd go the Ardbeg....or an extra old I.of Jura.

Personally I'd go for just about any good malt before an Islay, I'm afraid I cant stand that "Peaty"taste as DTC says it's like medicine

You're right, Tony; everyone knows that the correct mixer is milk, and not cola or ginger ale!

carrust - equal amounts of whisky and water in separate glasses, a sip of whisky and then a sip of water, make sure you have plenty of water available :-)
