I used to love the really peaty ones, such as the mighty Laphroaig but I can't take it these days. I now tend to favour the 'rich and fruity' style, which JBDOTB definitely fits into.
If we leave aside mega-expensive whiskies (such as Macallan Private Eye at £6,000!) and those that are hard to find in shops, I'd suggest that you give Aberlour 12 Year Old Single Malt a try. It's a cracking drink and a worthy competitor to JBDOTB, in my opinion:

Pretty much any single malt from scotland especially the McCallan if you like smooth, almost any decent IrIsh whiskey , Penderyn from WAles and a great many of the Japanese ones. I also recommend the English Whisky company especially the peaty one can't remember it's number, I find Jim Beam and the other US ones too monochrome for my taste even the higher priced versions. Too much oak swamps the subtle flavour range. I think it's best not to compare against real whisky but treat Bourbons as a totally separate animal.
Jim Beam is whiskey with an 'E' (as in all the US & Ireland) but my spellchecker changed barreled (which it should be) to 'barrelled'.
I opened a bottle of Jim Beam last night & the wonderful aroma filled the room - divine! I can still taste it.
When o'er the border my taste changes with the climate & I would go for a large Tamdu* (with a wee heavy)
* 90€ a bottle !
