Mews64's question got me thinking - I'm not a wine drinker, am more of a Jack n coke girl.

I've tried and tried to like wine, but i just can't, it all tastes horrid to me. But lots of my friends like Wine, and i rarely buy them any as a gift because i just don't know how you know if the wine is going to be lovely or bloody awful.

So, what things should i look for in a bottle of wine when buying for others? How do you separate the nectar from the plonk? I've heard that cheap doesn't always equal nasty. is that true?

For future reference, some guidelines can be gotton from the superplonk web site by wine writer Malcolm Gluck. They seem to be improving it at the moment so this link is to help you remember the name.

Cheap is not always nasty, and expensive tag doesn't mean the wine is worth it either.

Thank you! that's really useful.
Ooooh look I've found these for you ... as a good way to get an insight. Jancis drives me mad but the book is a good intro, and the Michael Broadbent is a lovely read for someone who is already a Vinofile.Amaze them with your new found knowledge or at these prices buy them the books cheaper than a bottle in somecases.
You probably don't like wine because you've been tasting the wrong ones! If you're a jack and coke girl you need to try something sweeter. I hated wine until about 4 years ago but there's still only some I can drink without pulling faces. Try a bottle of Blossom Hill White Zinfandel (you'll find it with the Roses [Rosays]).........it's lush and you might be surprised. Let us know........
