Can anyone explain the question of alcohol by volume. does a pint of beer contain twice the alcohol of a half, or is the amount not relevant. and if as in a brown split (remember them), i add a 2.4% bottle to a 5.0% bitter, what is its strength by volume?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.% ABV - because this is a measurement by volume it follows that if you half the quantity of beer you also half the quantity of alcohol contained in the beer, otherwise the % ABV would change.
Also if you mix equal measures of different strength alcohol the result would be the average (in the case given 3.7%) otherwise the proportions used become relevant.
