Why are 'on the vine' tomatoes more expensive than regular ones?

Arent all tomatoes grown on the vine and these are just harvested differently?

I suspect because the public will pay more ;-)

But I guess they could argue about having to transport stalk, and less easy to pack into a crate, etc.
Not only that, but there's greater crop loss due to the limited shelf life for which the grocer must compensate...

I think you're right kerriesmum, they are alot juicier!
The longer tomatoes stay on the vine, the sweeter they are...like most fruits. They also are more nutritious and contain more lycopene and beta carotene.
I think vine ripened tomatoes are much tastier and better for you health wise. IMO they are well worth the extra money.
A comparison of tomato pricing in the UK and Germany showed that organic 'on the vine' tomatoes are 97% more expensive in the UK than in Germany, while non-organic are 110% more expensive. Rip-off Britain or what? :-(
