I bought a live crab from the fish market yesterday and put it in the fridge. It was still alive at 1:00 am this morning but is now dead. Will it still be OK to cook and eat?

You should have put it in the freezer. That puts them into a comatose state. Once dead they deteriorate very quickly...
If it's been dead a few hours i wouldn't risk it...

Thanks, thought I'd better ask 'tis now in the bin. Just couldn't bring myself to chuck it in boiling water, it kept looking at me lol. Note to self, soft sod
Next time put it in the freezer and from the freezer straight into boiling water.
lol like ummmm said next time put it in the freezer till its comatose, easier to drop it in the water then
The most humane way to dispatch a crab is to thrust a skewer right between it's eyes then waggle it left and right, mashing it's brains. Sadly it'll still look at you though...

I think my next one will be ready cooked.
^ or in a tin
To be honest I have never eaten crab, although I like fish shrimps etc. But the thought of actually cooking a crab while it is still living, plungeing it into boiling hot water, makes me feel physically ill. I know this is the way to cook them, but no way, not for me.
