Can anybody tell me how I can make a tomato sauce that doesn't spit everywhere? it puts me off making it but I have a nice recipe which is much tastier than the jar stuff. If I just stick a lid on it I'm frightened it'll catch on and burn so what's the alternative to just standing over it stirring it all the time.

cook it in the microwave with a lid on?
lower heat?
Since you are reducing the sauce, there's no point in having a lid on as that just keeps the liquid in the pan. You could try Mccfluff's suggestion and reduce the heat from your cooker ring's lowest setting by using one of these...

Otherwise, continual stirring's perhaps the only answer!
I do mine on a low heat setting with a mesh anti-splash guard - let's the sauce reduce but stops the sauce escaping. From Robert Dyas, Wilko etc.
Also excellent when frying- no fat on hob!
Turn the heat down to the lowest setting and/or use a large saucepan.

Thank you everybody. So no magical solution. I'll look into the mesh anti-splash guard. Lower heat doesn't seem to do the trick as it'll just explode the same but at less frequent intervals. The microwave isn't going to 'reduce' the sauce and yes, maybe the 'keep stirring' is going to be a solution. Thank you.
