I've tried making chocolate raisins, it was very fiddly and time-consuming. Stabbed with a cocktail stick, dunked in the melted chocolate and put on greaseproof paper, then put the tray in the fridge for the chocolate to harden.

Maybe it's better to buy the raisins already done and just do the dates. Did you melt the chocolate the usual way, bowl above boiling water?
Why put yourself through all that WN? when you can buy 'em in the supermarket.

I melted the chocolate in the bowl above the water. Only way to do it, in my opinion. Have had nasty experiences trying to melt it in the microwave.

I think a more substantial fruit would be better, like the dates you've mentioned.
