Some good deals about for eating out
12 Answers
Had a meal out today at a chain pub - 4 adult meals and 2 kids meals (2 sirloin steaks with all the trimmings, a BBQ chicken thing with cheese and bacon, served with chips and a side salad, sausage and mash (with veg) - which thing 1 and thing 2 shared - and a kids sharer combo) for £32.40. I thought it was excellent value and the service was brilliant too. (Yes, I know it would have been cheaper to cook tea at home!)

I gave a friend (77 years old) a lift to see her friend in Essex yesterday. Our host had offered to buy us lunch at the local (independent) pub. It's run by a proper chef, who offers two-course lunches for just a fiver. It's not the usual shepherds pie or burger-&-chips type of things. He's got a wide menu including (for example) a hot pot packed with meat and veg and topped with cheese (served with loads of extra fresh veg, cooked to perfection). The desserts include traditional dishes like spotted dick but there are more modern offerings (such as a wonderfully moist sponge cake, packed with peaches),all served with a choice of cream, custard or ice cream.
I wish that we had something like that round here. (A pub I use in Ipswich offers bangers and mash as a 'lunchtime special' for 'only' £10).

Hi Buenchico - it was Marstons and it was actually pretty good (not brilliant, but the steak was edible and cooked how I wanted it - the last steak I had out at another chain that specialises in char-grilling (or something) was burnt to buggery). I checked Marstons website and they seem to do different deals in different pubs so you would need to check it out.
Thanks for your reply, Sherrardk. I'm assuming that you went to the Cock at Tupsley, where they do 2-for-1 on all main courses. My nearest Marston's pub (the only one within 20 miles) is about 15 miles away, on a new housing estate on the far side of Ipswich. (So it's not an area I'd normally go to). Their nearest equivalent offer is "2 meals for a tenner" but those offers always have a very limited menu, which isn't always particularly appealing to me.
Hi Buenchico - on this menu it was every adult meal or meal on the specials board (there must have been about twenty specials) so it might be worth looking at their menu online to see what it includes. The choice at the one we went to (The Cock at Tupsely) was huge, I am really fussy and there was loads I could have chosen. I would prefer to support an independent pub (after having one of our own) but with so many of us we can't risk getting seven crap meals or not having a lot of choice (and they usually start serving food too late for us).
One of the benefits of being in a city is that the competition is high and so many deals about and I have aps on my phone for things like Vouchercloud I can check. We always look at deals for work lunches as there are quite a few of us. There are also local discount cards for things like food and the cinema, can save a lot of money with them. I had a really nice Scampi and Chips in a local Hogs Head recently for £1.99!
