Using cookery bags

You know those bags on the adverts that you put a chicken and spices into them, are they any good and can you also use them for beef, lamb fish and veg?
What's the maximum time you can use them for and what's to stop them burning or tainting the food with a plasticky taste or smell?

I'd guess they're disposable and the temperature in an oven would never get high enough to melt them.
They're very similar to roasting bags; and they don't leave any "plasticy taste or smell". Also keeps your roasting tin clean!

Thanks sandyroe. Jeniadams i've never used a roasting bag but assume it cooks by steaming the food and keeping all juices and moistures contained within? Any gadget that saves time or me having to do the dreaded washing up has to be a good thing!
they are made of that crinkly plastic, not like freezer bags
