You hear differing views on how to cook a steak Some people say don't oil the pan, some say don't season before, others will season before cooking, should the steak be at room temp or out of the fridge?

So what is the best process to use to ensure the best steak? Thanks.

I stick it in about 200...but only for a few minutes. For some reason it seems to make a difference (watching TV chefs do it) then put on a warm (warm, not hot) plate and cover with tin foil and leave to rest for at least 5 minutes.
Yes you do cupid, they come out into the tin foil....you'd end up with braised steak.
Rump, 2" thick frozen. Season & grill direct from freezer if you want rare.
Seriously Tambo?
out of the oven, alu foil over the top of a warmed plate, and then a tea towel, other wise if an oven at your lowest setting
I would never cook steak from frozen, to iffy, you could get a gippy tummy
or worse!

The red juice that runs out of a rare steak isn't blood btw

That's what I was thinking...
that is technically true...
Not after 5mins a side on full heat. Poke it with a fork to check, it should have bounce. That's how my OH liked it.
Sounds like it'll be awful Tambo...cooking and defrosting at the same time won't end in a tender steak imo...
As expected there are very many differing ways of cooking the 'perfect' steak. It just goes to show how subjective perfection is!
To be fair...most of the answers are very similar with just slight variations.

Except frozen steak....I wouldn't recommend that...lol
You're right Ummm; it was my subtle way of acknowledging the similar methods and not saying What The Funicular to the ones I thought were somewhat left of field ;-)

At the end of the day though if the cook and family sit down and enjoy their dinner it's not for anyone else to judge. I know how I want mine done/not done though!
best done on a barbie with full salad :)
