I made two sponges last night which I am going to sandwich together with jam and/or cream in the middle. But I am not sure how to finish off the top. I would like to maybe put on jam and icing but I'm not sure that would work. Should I heat the jam first and put it on then put on the icing? Does anyone think this will work okay or what way should I do it? Or should I do something else?

I think that would be 'over the top'
I agree with jomifl, a sponge sandwich with cream/jam in the middle is best left plain without topping.

I wouldn't put jam on top of a sponge, just icing. If it's a fattless sponge just sprinkle with icing sugar. An attractive way to do this with either type is to put a paper doyley on top, sprinkle with icing sugar and remove doyley leaving a pretty pattern.

Jam and buttercream in the middle. I usually put buttercream on the top, or you can just do a dusring of icing sugar.
You could dust it with a little bit of icing sugar , or with an even littler bit of caster sugar.
or even a dusting!

What about icing on top and jam and cream in the middle? That sounds nice to me.
cut out a heart or hearts in paper lay them on the top of the cake and dredge with icing sugar when you remove the hearts the shape is left unsprinkled you can use stars or other shapes too
what type of icing are you considering? make your own with icing sugar or already made roll out?
I will often do a celebration cake with Victoria sandwich with jam and butter cream filling, then on the sides and top I spread a thin layer of jame this is difficult as it picks up cake as you spread. Then roll out icing lower on top with rolling pin, smooth down sides, trim excess with knife and decorate...or eat
'jam'

Ha-ha what-the, I thought jame was some sort of icing there for a minute. I am planning on making my own icing, just using icing sugar mixed with some water and spread over the top. Defnitely not using that thick roll out stuff.
