Following a thread in "People and Places" about Powergen...

Whatever happened to St Ivel Gold?

This was the marge in our house in the 80s before we switched to Anchor (Butter made from [green green]grass.  Odd when everyone else makes their butter from milk).  ANYHEW - My questions are:

  • Does anyone remember St Ivel gold?
  • Has anyone seen any recently?
  • Did it get bought out by another company?
  • Anyone have any other news on the St Ivel front?

I have a tub of it in my fridge at the moment.  I don't have any trouble finding it in supermarkets in Shropshire.  I am a shopping tart and flit between Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrisons etc.

Ah- thanks Grunty!!  I hadn't actually looked! *blushes*  Just had a blast from the dairy product past during another thread.

Other users may as well ignore this thread then!  Sorry folks! *blushes again*

I remember it too - my nan used to get it (she Utterly Butterly now) and when I used to stay there at the weekends as a kid (during the mid 80's) I was so impressed with the blue foil lid with the gold cross on it.

.........as for the latter part of your question. St Ivel was a division of Unigate. Unigate changed its name to Uniq and moved away from its dairy roots. St Ivel was sold to Dairy Crest in 2002.

"Peel back this foil seal and you are greeted with a rather delicious looking buttery spread which does have a slight whiff about it, its hard to describe the scent but lets just say a cross between skimmed milk and butter, its not appealing but then its not unappealing either".
