My pressure cooker is ancient the seal in the lid has gone hard I have put it in oil overnight to try and soften it no good does anyone out there know how to soften a hard seal cannot get a replacement as it is obselite

The rubber has gone brittle with age and will never get better again - you'll find if you try to use it that the pan doesn't come up to pressure, and steam escapes all round the rim. get a replacement - I'm sure many firms sell them but heres an example:

Try Ebay picturepost, plenty on there ....... think they are called gasket seal.
