In the north west, a muffin is a round flat bread (oven bottom being popular). Can you get these around the country, and what are they called?

Sounds similar to a "stottie cake" from Newcastle
You can buy them in Essex too - we call them muffins.
We call them stotties in Newcastle but they are chewier and more lush than anything else! Especially when they're well done on the bottom. Morrisons sell oven bottom muffins near me but they aren't stotties! We dont say cake either scubadiver!
Actually snappy - they are called stottie cakes, but they are always shortened  to "stotties" - I was giving the full name for completeness!!
