I love this stuff but only ever prepare it by smothering it in parmesan cheese and throwing some butter-fried mushrooms in. Yummy! But I wanna try something different. I like most things and I'm a good cook so nothing is too much trouble, within reason (and a small urban kitchen). Any ideas?

apex204 just a quick question, when I try to fry mushrooms in butter the butter fairly quickly burns, if I try it on a very low heat it's not hot enough to cook, what am I doing wrong?
put some olive oil in with the butter, it stops it from burning
but back to apex's question, try pine nuts, basil leaves and EV olive oil for a cold dish

Hi,

As my parents are Italian and they love Gnocci with tradional sauce to have is bolognese!

Buono appetito!!

apex204 - not very imaginative, but good all the same.

Fry a bayleaf and a little garlic in butter, add cream, salt, black pepper, nutmeg and gorgonzola. And dash of sherry wouldn't do this dish any harm. And you can still smother this with your parmesan cheese and your butter-fried mushrooms.

kev100 - is your frying pan base thick enough?

apex204 - just had another idea. Tin of tomatoes, finely chopped garlic, salt, black pepper, balsamico vinegar and, if you can get hold of it, a handful of Thai basil. Blend, heat up gently and slap on your gnocci. This would also be an answer to the "what can I cook for tea tonight in five minutes" type question.

Xollob that sounds fantastic! Where can I get hold of Thai basil?

I can recommend a couple of places in Darmstadt...

A well-stocked Chinese supermarket should have it. I don't know if Tesco etc. have it, but it wouldn't surprise me. If you have a decent greengrocer in your vicinity you could try badgering him - I think he should be able to get it from a wholesaler.

It really is worth tracking down - a fantastic combination of basil and liquorice.
