icing as i understand it

That sounds like butter cream then Dave - which we use to put in the middle of Victoria sponges. Thanks.
Yes icing, but I love the American 'frosting'.
American fosting is called frosting because it is white, pure white
They use Crisco, a white fat - UK equivalent is Trex - with butter flavouring

Can you buy frosting in the UK?
you can get tubes of stuff, its being advertising on tv at the mo, that annoying couple making cupcakes

dead easy to make though ann, even i can knock some of that up :-)
Found an american recipe no crisco - that sounds really unhealthy.

You can buy frosting in the UK in most supermarkets in the baking aisle. Its by Betty Crocker, in a tub, in the vanilla white or chocolate flavour.

From the same site as dave's link - this is very similar to the frosting I grew up with

yuck, I wouldn't buy the Dr Oetker stuff - it's vile

You can get Crisco in the UK, but it isn't easy to find
Any frosting you buy ready made taste artificial IMO

I will tell you why I asked - I am considering buying a Cake pops maker from Lakeland (like cupcakes on a stick like lollipops) for my niece who makes cakes for children's parties.

You can make your own by crumbling cake mixture and adding frosting - recipe on YouTube but its American.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone, very helpful as usual :)
I tried that 7 minute frosting on my son's birthday cake, didn't even last 7 minutes before it slid down the side of the cake and on to the plate. Don't know what I did wrong.

Think I will buy her the special machine then I don't have to improvise and use the frosting. Thanks all - I will let you know in May whether the cake pops work - the cake maker has good reviews though, and Lakeland is an excellent company.
It's easy to make cake pops and you don't need frosting really, as they are covered in coloured chocolate - any cheap marge mixed with icing sugar then mixed with cake crumbs will do
