What is the point of barbeques?

Why, when the sun comes out does half the population decide they want to cook lunch outside, with all the hassle and cleaning up afterwards that comes with it? Why not just cook some food in the kitchen and bring it outside? So much easier and simpler.

The minute the sun comes out though Mr BM (whose cooking repertoire extends to about 3 dishes) insists on barbequeing. Of course, I have to prepare the food, marinade it, prepare the salad and then HE cooks the meat and is terribly self congratulatory.
It's a man/hunter/gatherer thing I think. "we bring fire to woman".

I have a gas BBQ and it is probably less mess than cooking it indoors.
I agree if you have a coal BBQ as you have to light the coals, get them up to heat, and then because of the uneven flame a lot of the food gets burned.
But my gas BBQ has an even flame, takes a minute or so to get up to heat, and I can put a lot more on it than on my grill.
Plus standing out side cooking in the sun is lovely.
