Got back from work yesterday and there was a card from the P.O saying they had tried to deliver a registered envelope. It is adressed to my so, aged 12. How do I collect it or do I have to take him with me?We have different surnames too. And what do I take? If I go without him and take his id then how do I prove he is even related to me?

Same used to happen with my daughter. I used to take both our passports. They write down the passport numbers. Take a bill with you to prove your address, and the card.
Yup, that's all you need!

Brilliant, thanks guys!
Why can't he collect it? If he is twelve I would have though to encourage him to be a bit independent? Or take him there and let him go in on his own.
