I only ever drink coffee, however when I go on holiday abroad (we always go self catering) there is generally a small metal coffee pot thingy in the cupboard and I know this sounds silly, but I don't have a clue what I am supposed to do with it so end up drinking foul instant coffee. Can someone please tell me how to use this contraption so I can enjoy proper coffee on my holiday this year. thanks

Can you describe the pot? I can think of a couple of types it might be. The most common types are percolators and regular drips.

Here is an excellent link that tells how to use these two types and others.

You probably should use one heaping teaspoon of coffee for each cup you want to make, plus add one extra. So four cups is five teaspoons; eight cups, put in nine teaspoons.

Take a look at the link and see if you can tell us what kind you think you have, and maybe we can add a bit more detail!

excellent link there Rampart, the one we had in our villa in Menorca last year was like the stove top espresso one. I am familiar with the regular drip and the plunger methods. I am assuming from what the link says that this is obviously designed for the small espresso cups as the water receptacle is quite small and would probably just be about enough for my breakfast cup, bit of a faff for one cup of coffee though isn't it or am I missing something?

Jules - give me 24 hours and I'll get back to you on this one.  I've spent 6 months abroad studying on Erasmus programme this year and ALL the Italian and Latin American students brought their stove top coffee makers with them!  They come in different sizes.  As you say - it is indeed a complicated process of water and powder stuff and then on the stove.  But the smell from it is WONDERFUL and although I hate the taste of coffee, the people from the coffee expert countries of the world won't drink theirs any other way!

I'll ask my Italian friend asap and get back to you on tips/justifications! :-)

here I use to use a mr moka coffee pot,is this the one you mean( :)
