My daughter has asked me to bake and decorate my grandaughters cake.I'm hiring a number one shape tin.I've seen a few ideas on the internet but was looking for a video clip to help (I'm no expert!)Managed to find one to show me a round cake being buttercreamed but was wondering if anyone knows of a site that will help show and advise of quantity of icing etc. Many thanks.

I just covered the one I baked in buttercream and piped a pale pink buttercream around the edges. Since you said you haven't much experience keep it simple and you can buy icing pens and such at the supermarket. Or else you can buy fondant icing and roll it out to fit the cake and then decorate it, it's posible to buy all the decorations in a good supermarket - I don't suppose you live anywhere near Edinburgh as there is a great shop called the Finishing Touch which carries everything (and more) for cake decorating. In all honesty your grandaughter won't mind as she is too young really to notice, so try not get yourself all worked up keep it simple and you'll be fine

Many thanks for your reply Nungate. That shop in Edinburgh sounds wonderful-wish I was a bit nearer!I'll tak your advice and keep it simple.
The shop you are hiring the tin from will be able to advise on the quantity of buttercream and really the technique for applying is no different to a round one.

If you have any specific concerns I'm sure the cake tin hirers will be able to advise.
Butter cream is easier than roll out icing!! I decorated round the side of the number one with dolly mixtures :0) cute and girly and hides the edge hehe!

Some sprinkly glitter and asda sell little edible paper daisies etc xxx
