I think it is all down to which ones you buy, I use ( tesco finest thick chunky oven chips) from tesco, they are lovely wether done in the oven or fried. no after taste at all. I must admit they are better fried but healthier done in the oven.
We eat them but only Aunt Bessie's, don't really enjoy them though. Would much rather make my own, I just can't stand the oily smell round the house after, well that and the fact that the last time I plugged the fryer in I tried deep fried Mars Bars.........it didn't end well!
We like the Homefries, as we don't have a deep frier, we can't make our own. It always seems to be a waste of oil to fill a big pan to make chips occasionally.
I really dislike frozen oven chips done in the oven. Instead I deep fry them, a handful at a time in a small pot with around an inch and a half of oil in it. Each handful only takes a couple of minutes, and this way, taste and texture are far, far, better.
I can only eat them if they have been deep fried, for me it isnt so much the taste, I cant get them down, they seem go halfway and then stop and stay there midway, I then need a drink to budge it, they dont taste to great either, chip shop chips are the best, good honest greasy chips!!!
