No, but I've dropped food on the floor whilst (attempting to) cook for people in the past, dusted it off and thrown it back in the frying/roasting pan Dread to think what happens before that stage!

Everyone that eats meat should have to go on a visit to an abattoir, just once, to understand the process.

If you can't do that, then you are a hypocrite and should be a vegetarian ...

Don't follow that logic at all. So if one thinks they may need an operation in the future they'd be as hypocrite if they didn't visit a hospital theatre and watch one performed ?

Nope - not the same.

It's about the use of a proxy to protect you from something unpleasant and how that can lead to a rather disconnected attitude to life (both human and animal).

If you are prepared to have someone kill and prepare an animal on your behalf, then I think it is important that you understand what is being done. I've been there, seen it and (whilst it isn't my ideal way of spending a morning) I think it was a valuable experience.

In your analogy, I think it's closer to situation of people who won't be on the organ donor register, but will gladly accept an organ if they need it ...

To my shame we once went on holiday to Scotland and to get to our "hunting lodge"(Self catering holiday let--fantastic) we had to drive five miles through fields of sheep and all I could think of was roast lamb.So I sent my husband back down the five miles to buy a joint of lamb. Very nice it was too.

Does anyone remember a series of programmes which were filmed in an abattoir, with members of the public viewing the whole process and able to ask questions? I found it very interesting and it actually reassured me...not that I needed reassuring to be honest.

As a student I worked in a fruit cannery. Vowed then I would never eat canned strawberries, raspberries or peas. I know what I put into the cans!!!!

I remember Hugh Fearnley Whittingstal doing something similar about seeing meat being processed, taking people to abbatoirs. I also agree with that if you are not happy with the process, become a vegetarian

Generally speaking im aware of what goes on in the back ground and I have been around food processing plants and abattoirs. not always the best of experiences but some are also very reassuring.

I still love my food!!

I'm not a big meat eater anyway. I wouldn't miss it if it disappeared from my diet.

Fish, I love fish and seafood.
