Yes working with "the public" is always a challenge and it hurts when your efforts are belittled by comedians seeking an easy target. Many years ago I worked on a main Post Office counter. We had to know around 150 different kinds of transaction (e.g., issuing passports, car tax, German savings banks etc etc) and deal civily with everyone from masses of foreign students to eccentric old ladies via the inevitable abusive drunks, at the same time keeping the money straight or else - trouble. Daily one would go that extra mile and be able to help someone who appreciated it, which was rewarding. All kinds of problems came our way. Then at home, worn out but feeling you've done a good job you hear some lazy comedian taking the p out of you because he knows it will be an easy laugh. I remember it was demoralising. Now of course the poor blighters doing that job also have to "sell up" PO products and are obliged to move customers along as if on a conveyor belt all under the eyes of the "Mystery shopper" who reports you if you don't smile enough. The McD employee at my local branch who was dealing politely with a bunch of restless and abusive youths while there was a delay (not of his making) had my utmost sympathy...especially when one of them stole the entire cake (muffin?) display and ran off laughing. I do wish we could be allowed chips though...
