Will you please put me out of my misery and tell me what is so heinous about a pizza?

To my mind a pizza is little more than a fancy cheese on toast with extra toppings of your choosing.

I genuinely don't understand why it should be reviled so.

I'm not a fan either. I don't know why dough.
Arksided - I'm sure any pizza delivery place would make you a chicken and mushroom one if you asked them to.
Viv, yes I have asked and had some... but this was a creamy type cheese they used different from the norm... the combination proper hit the spot.
got a dominos pizza pamphlet through the post £16.99 for a large pizza you must be joking!!!
Dominoes and Papa John's are expensive, there are a lot cheaper ones out there.

Aww sorry about that Arksided.
Saying one doesn't like Pizza is rather like saying you don't like sandwiches (which I'm sure some don't)

The base can be any type you wish - for me as thin and light and crispy as possible.

The topping can be anything you like - choose your favourite things an away you fo.

It will only be oily/greasy if you add oily or greasy toppings.

hate Tomatoes/Anchovies etc ?- just don't add them.

When my daughters were younger, we would make the dough together then they would invent their own toppings - some were wacky but all got eaten and it was fun in the kitchen learning what worked.

SP ** - choose your favourite things and away you go..
Viv, my search continues ;-)
Arksided, it's probably mascarpone, i use it on my pizzas sometimes.

Back to the question, I love a homemade pizza and sometimes have a takeaway but I'm usually disappointed with them. OH will only eat homemade and wouldn't touch any of the others.
Love anchovies on a pizza. Also love an egg inside a calzone. Sometimes only a pizza will do...
I love pizza! Even frozen ones. My dad doesn'tvlike it but it's more he begrudges paying for it, to him it's peasent food and just a way of not wasting leftover bits in fridge.

I even like the Dr Olken ones!:-D
The Italians have ideas above their station when it comes to their cuisine. Essentially they have two dishes - cheese on toast and pasta (usually with cheese). However, when you go to one of their restaurants you are confronted with a menu of about 200+ items. Delving deeper, though, you find these are really not very imaginative variations on two basic dishes - cheese on toast and pasta (usually with cheese).

Pizzas are just cheese on a not very appetizing slab of bread, with a few extras on top. In recent years certainly in the UK, the bread has transformed from being a thin base designed simply to carry the topping to become a thick, doughy pap which, if presented alone, would be rapidly consigned to the dustbin.

The multitude of varieties of pasta are simply concoctions of flour and water formed into different shapes. They are all the same, they all taste the same, and apart from the odd varieties which have a hint of colour, they are the same. Many of them are of ridiculous design being virtually impossible to handle. Spaghetti, for example, should be manufactured and served in one inch lengths. To serve it in lengths of a foot or more is simply ridiculous.

Having said that I hope, with or without their spaghetti or pizza, that the Italians are victorious on Saturday night thus hastening the end, in England at least, of the ridiculous hype that has surrounded the latest tedious competition involving "the beautiful game".

As I say in my reply above the choice is endless as is the choice of a sandwich - the only thing holding anyone back is a lack of imagination.

However, if someone generally hates any type of bread/dough/pastry then they will not be converted.
Pizza does nothing for me. It's probably okay on a buffet but I couldn't imagine dining out at a pizza place.
Nor me, not when I could make four fresh for that price.
One advantage to pizza, of course, is that a slice of it can be "grabbed" and eaten hand to mouth. No tedious involvement with eating irons required so you can eat with one hand whilst farting about on Twitter or Facebook with the other.
I don't get it either Eccles. It isn't fine dining, but a well-made pizza is a great meal.

..I despair
Love sandwiches but could never eat a pizza. Just the smell of cooked cheese turns my stomach, can't be doing with pasta of any type either although I know I'm in the minority.
the thick base is from Chicago rather than Italy, isn't it? All the ones I've had in Italy have been very thin and not piled high with ingredients. Pizza Express do them but I've not seen them in other restaurants.
Rockyracoon, Thank you for that, not being too familiar with Cheeses (AB users aside ;-) 'mascarpone' I will investigate.
