runny yolk and sorta hardish white
I have one. Way too much effort for simple boiled eggs.
I've got one of these things -

My eggs are now (more or less) consistent!
i have one in the tupperware(meaning never used )cupboard ,four minutes in boiling water gives lovely soft yolks and firm whites
Where do you keep you eggs?
How do you currently cook them?
What size pan do you use?
What is going wrong with your current method?

Click http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cuisine/european/english/soft-boiled-eggs.html for Delia Smith's method. Works for me. Key point...ensure the eggs are at room temperature before you start; do not, for example, put them in the water straight from the fridge but get them out the night before.

My step father has one of those egg timer thingies for the pan and swears by it.

However, what temp your eggs are to start matters too.
I get perfectly boiled eggs every time - eggs from the Fridge, fill the pan with cold water so they are just covered, put on the gas at maximum for nine minutes.

Works for me - whites set and yolk nicely runny.
Yep - the red ball thingy is good.
It's finding an electric egg which is the hard part.
I don't keep my eggs in the fridge, I store them pointy end down in a rack on the worktop.

Obviously, I didn't know where Jennyjoan kept her eggs and many people do keep them in the fridge. My advice...and Delia's...was simply to ensure they were at room temperature.
One egg at room temp.
Place in a small pan (like a milk pan)
Cover with cold water but just enough so the egg is not completely submerged.

Place on a high heat and as soon as the water boils time it for 3 mins exactly. Remove from pan and open immediately. This is important as otherwise the egg will continue to cook under its own steam, thus giving you a hard yolk.
I agree with Obiter, heat the water from cold and then 3 minutes when boiling. Then under the cold tap for 10conds or so, to stop the cooking process, then eat with homemade wholemeal toast. Had a look at the timer recommended by 2sp and bought one to try. Well it was only £1 inc postage so will give it a try.
