I recently bought two more as occasionally I want to do four poached eggs at the same time. However, these new ones, although they look the same, have ten small holes in the bottom which I didn't notice when I bought them.
I've just used them for the first time and they were a disaster, the egg white started oozing out immediately, and then they filled with water and sank to the bottom of the pan. The eggs came out with watery whites and rock hard yolks, the ones done in the original poachers were, as usual, perfect.
I don't know if yours have holes in them, mallyh, but I'd they do I'd chuck them out and get some without holes.

I've just bought two more, without holes, and reading the instructions it does say to use a sauté pan with a lid, and about one and a half inches of water, just as you suggest Tilly.
There you go mallyh, maybe that's your answer, shallow water. Can't see it working with these holey ones Ive got though.
