Short Cut To Potato Baking

Its gonna be baked potato with cheese and beans tonight.
So, can I part cook the spud in the microwave, to save on cooking time, if so how long for ?.

Yes. About 7-8 mins on high should do it. Prick the spud first. I usually coat the skin in butter and salt to crisp it up and finish in oven or even under the grill turning regularly.
I much prefer baked potato cooked in the microwave. I don't eat the skins though.

Sticking skewers through the potates speeds up baking in the oven as the skewers conduct heat into the centres more quickly.
Time in microwave depends on the size of the spud. Bigger ones take longer obviously. Try 7 to 8 mins as retro says and then just see if it has started to soften slightly. If still hard just give it another minute or two.
A tip given to me by a navy chef is to boil them for a few minutes. He was cooking on ships before microwaves had been invented.

Very true I have a little folding stand with 4 upright spikes to put the jackets through when baking.
I suspect you could fully cook it is your wished. There are things such as twice baked potatoes where one cooks it once, takes out the inside, mashes it, adds any extra bits one wants to it, and shoves it back in the skin for a second go later. If one can do that, a part cooked potato should be fine.
Definitely put them under the grill to crisp up. Crispy skin is the best bit! Brings back memories of bonfire night and putting the spud in the embers. They were black but tasted wonderful.
The skin,allegedly, has all the nutrition in it. More so than the flesh inside.
Apparently so. I still don't eat it though. I'll eat the skins on new spuds.
I'm without a microwave for the first time in years. I've always cooked Jacket spuds in one. I would like to make them tomorrow, how long do you reckon in the oven?
I do them about 180c( fan) for 1 1/4 hours having pricked,buttered and salted them

Depends on the size, but leave them until the peel goes brown and slightly crisp and you can stab them witrh a fork.

just had a quick glance at my Marguerite Patterns Everyday Cookbook and she advises the same. Same time in a moderate oven.
