my friend was talking tody about how she'd been looking for blancmange mix, which prompted a whole convo about "retro" food - food that you haven't eaten for aaaaages.
I'll add: evaporated milk; tinned steri-cream
do you have any foods you havent had for a long time?

For at least forty five years, I havent eaten:-
Tripe, cow heel, heart, oxtail stew, brains, chiterlings, savoury ducks, sweetbreads, malt and cod liver oil or ox tongue

Whatever happened to Vesta's beef risotto? I miss it so much :-(
...and then you lick the tasty soggy newspaper.
I still make orange jelly with mandarin oranges in for the grandchildren.

Another favourite is sliced bananas in Carnation evap milk.

Yes, walnut whips, I semi boycotted them when the manufacturers stopped putting the other half of the walnut at the base of the treat.
The coffee ones were my favorite.
My mum used to do a jelly with little manderines in most Sundays. Thanks Mamyalynne, brought back some nice memories. Mother in law used to mash bananas up with evaporated milk and a sprinkling of sugar. Yummy!

Two things my dear old Gran used to make when we went round

1 Steamed jam roly poly tied up in a cotton rag - to die for
2 Sugar butties - errr not to die for but from
All this comfort food.....sugar and fat....Goodness me!

Now, we eat raw carrots, muesli and rye bread.
Blancmange,angel delight,fray bentos Pies,evaporated milk,tinned peaches and mandarins....I see them all the time. It's what gets donated to us.
More fresh food please!!
Never mind Angel Delight - how about Instant Whip? I can't remember which of them had Butterscotch flavour - yum!
Oh yes sugar butties - white bread, white sugar. And Porridge with a CRUST of white sugar - or golden syrup....

Hi bednobs...I'm a cook for a homeless charity. We're *trying* to rely a bit less on tinned stuff...more cooking from scratch.
