My local chippies (chippys) are cooking such large fish that surely must be part of Nessie (massive). They are yuck.

They are no way cod or haddock. Is your chippy good. I could buy cod from fishmongers but no good at batter.

If you think they are passing off cheaper fish as cod (ie ling), then report it to the local trading standards. Otherwise use a different chippy.

mxy - right now all local chippies not good to me. I travelled about 5 miles last Friday to go to a good chippy and it was cod. You certainly know the difference.
Report them if they are not serving cod but saying it is.
lots try and passs off whiting as cod...trading standards have been known to do checks
Pollock ?
I was going to say Pollack but Anne beat me to it. I believe they get around it by saying that Pollack is part of the Cod family which it is !
hey retro ..how's you ? xx
Hi minty. Hanging on just. :-) Got a new date for my operation but it is quite close to the supposed doctor's strike so got my fingers crossed it's not cancelled again. :-) xxx
Maybe Basa Fish Pangasias Boucourti. This has found its way onto our supermarket fish counters.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basa_fish
Our chippy serves panga as a cheaper alternative to cod, but he does state what it is. You can certainly tell the difference, but sometimes the panga is really nice and sometimes not.
Are you basing your doubt simply on the size of the fish?
I read some bad things about Basa and even though I read that it was a load of bull I still can't brink myself to eat it.

We have a really nice eat in chippy in town. Takeaway fish and chips just go soggy and greasy.
Panga and basa is the same fish, also called Vietnamese river cobbler. It's a catfish and is now in a lot of frozen fish products such as battered fillets and fish fingers sold as 'white fish' on the front of the pack.

I think it is revolting however it is cooked.
Our chippies sell small and large cod and haddock.
I havent seen a small fish at a chippie for yonks !
The small ones aren't actually small.
If you ARE basing your doubt on the size of the fish, then why can't it be cod or haddock?
Cod can grow to a huge size http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/10054955/Record-breaking-103lb-cod-would-provide-200-fish-suppers.html .
.Anyone in my town trying to pass off another fish as cod would be dipped in their own batter and deep fried!

It's like 'Rock Salmon'? You can call it Huss, dogfish,Tope but Salmon it aint. Small shark!!!
Stick to haddock! I'm not keen on cod (bottom feeders), but we have a super 'chippie' (also fish restaurant) nearby. I don't live all that far from Mrs. O and I confirm that any poor chippie would be out of business very quickly.
