Christmas Cake

I don't have brandy and I'm not about to spend £10 on a bottle of brandy to use in my Christmas Cake and have it sit around doing diddly.

Could I use Whisky instead?

If I was going to use another spirit in Christmas cake, instead of brandy, I'd choose rum. (After all, many supermarkets sell both brandy sauce and rum sauce to go with Christmas pudding, so they seem to be naturally interchangeable).

Whisky wouldn't be my own choice. However there are recipes which use it, e.g.

so it's certainly a possibility.

Brandy needn't cost you a tenner though. Asda can sell you a half bottle of their own VSOP stuff for six quid.

How about buying a miniature or two? Whisky or rum would work just as well. I use in in my Christmas Puds

A half bottle (350ml, £6) costs the same as two 50ml miniatures (£3 each) in Asda, so I know which I'd go for!

If you must use rum, please use the golden or white rum, as dark rum has too powerful a flavour. But whisky should be fine.

Ta Eccles Whisky will have to do...plenty of that here.

I don't have sherry either...plenty wine but don't think that will do :/

I did consider minatures but don't have any and my local supermarket only has mini wines :/ Every little DOESNT help and I'm not going back to Sainsbury's until next week :/

If you can't afford rum - why not use rum essence

I'm not sure an essence would work,as the purpose of the booze (besides flavour) is to add moisture.

I have considered orange juice too but I feel it needs a kick of alcamahol lol

I always use half rum and half brandy.....and drink the rest ...err not all at once it lasts me for a couple of months.. xx

My Christmas cakes are so well fed you can still wring them out in June!

As others have said Whisky will be grand - I have used Calvados before as well as Whisky.

I think the cake my late mum made last year must have been well fed too Eccles...threw he last wee bit out last week and was still moostish and hadn't turned...the marzipan looked horrid bit all else was ok.

I don't drink lilacben so the remainder would just sit around lol
